KIMATICA:
We are a London-based creative studio, led by multidisciplinary artists Maria Almena and Nestor Rubio. Kimatica designs transformative experiences through performance arts, interactive technology and the human body, exploring consciousness, perception and the sublime, to inspire interconnectedness and introspection. Our media-art installations and performances are a radical interplay of light, motion and emotion, using in-house real-time tracking software centred on the human body.
Our signature experiences offer transformative possibilities to a contemporary audience, inviting them to explore the limits of their bodies, the depths of their imagination and the edges of their subconscious mind. We reclaim the therapeutic power of artistic experience in society’s evolution and recovery, as well as in democratising technology, this is why we only develop open source software and accessible tools.
Our practice is shared via lectures and workshops, drawing on the latest scientific and technological discoveries through collaborative academic research with current collaborations with King’s College London and Greenwich and Goldsmith Universities.
We’ve been commissioned by The National Gallery, Tate Museum, British Council, Arts Council of England and Battersea Arts Centre amongst others. Our creations have been showcased at V&A Museum, Kinetica Art Fair, Barbican Centre, and international festivals such as Jerusalem Light festival, LLum BCN and Wilderness festivals amongst many others. They won The Winter Pride London’s Alternative Performance Award by Smirnoff.
Metaverse Divinations:
A research project funded by Arts Council England to create a series of augmented reality ritual performances.
We translated our performances into augmented reality (AR) experiences, developing new software tools and working with scientists and therapists. Using ritual design as a framework, these series of ritual performances promote embodiment, interconnectedness and connection to the self. The characters are representing light and shadow archetypes, exploring the collective unconscious and dream-like states. The AR real-time visuals represent natural elements and respond to the performer’s movement and the colours in the scene.
